PHOTOSHOP HW 1

This is an image from the "US Immigration: Families Torn Apart" of Evelyn Velazquez from "The People's Portfolio" taken in Phoenix on July 29, 2013. Her father was arrested for working with false documents, spending more than 10 months in immigration detention. People move to the United States to escape war, have a better and safer life, opportunities, and many other factors. However, when they arrive, they are prohibited to do many things, such as work, buy a car, open a credit card account, even to rent a house, you have to have a U.S. Citizen be your guarantor. Being an immigrant is not easy, specially when you have a family to support but can't legally work.

Being an immigrant myself, this image brought me close to my own emotions because when I first moved to the United States I came with an F-2 visa, being my mom's dependent while she went to school here. My dad was not able to get his F-2 visa so he stayed in Brazil working, while me, my sister, and my mom lived in the US. We spent four years without him and it was very hard not having him with us. If these 4 years without my dad were hard, I can only imagine what the Velazquez family had to go through with the father being arrested and missing his own son's birth just because he wanted to work.

My sister took this picture of me for this assignment, however, it came out very spontaneous. This image visually expresses a connection to other human beings, specifically her. My sister means everything to me, we've always been super close to each other. I think every time I look at her, I look with a proud big sister look, my eyes even glow. I think this image also expresses connection to the world around me because I was genuinely having a good day and I was just so happy with how my life was, felt like the world was perfect.
